This is a portrait of a woman sewing a soccer ball. Every soccer ball sold anywhere in the world takes at least a day's labor to piece together. The threads inside of each ball are grey with the oils from the hands of the person who sewed it. I was introduced to the women of Huahuapan de Leon because alongside their craft sewing balls, they have organized a worker's cooperative and are beginning to fight for the rights of indigenous people and women in the south of Mexico. With this portrait I honor the labor that goes into each object that they create, as well as the work that they are doing to bring about social change.

Somewhere between a print and a painting, each was hand painted with multiple layers of staining and so each varies greatly. While signed and numbered as an edition of 250, they are, more accurately, monoprints, or unique variants from an edition.

All profits from anything I sell through the Just Seeds site is donated directly to projects, the likes of which I would like to see more of in the world. So far through the sale of prints we have been able to support the formation of the Just Seed cooperative, the development of the Down and Dirty Bike Coop in Winona, Minnesota (who I met because they were so rad and supportive to the Miss Rockaway Armada as we were coming down the upper Mississippi in 2006), and am hoping with the sale of current prints to support the CACTUS collective in Oaxaca, Mexico, a good friend Micheal Tisdale, in the writing and production of his play, Gold Star Ohio, which looks at grief, loss and the Iraq war, as well as to bottom-line the first year of development of a free school and community arts center in Braddock, Pennsylvania.
