Shaun Slifer

shaun_portrait.jpg

Shaun Slifer currently lives and works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Although he does not identify solely as an artist, he practices multidisciplinary and often public creative acts as a counter-measure against social injustice and, on a personal level, as a life strategy for sanity and well-being. WIthin the Justseeds cooperative, Shaun works primarily with letterpress and other minimal, text-based graphics. In 2008-9, he worked on the content for the collaborative book Firebrands: Portraits from the Americas (Microcosm, 2010) with Justseeds member Bec Young. Along with Bec and Mary Tremonte, he runs Justseeds' shipping department in Pittsburgh, which includes managing the web store, organizing events at the space, and other un-romantic, back-end work. Outside of Justseeds, Shaun's work takes a variety of forms, including video, static and kinetic sculpture, and signage of dubious legality. His projects have appeared nationally in a variety of galleries, nonprofit exhibition spaces, and community centers, as well as under bridges and alongside interstate highways. He regularly works in collaboration with other artists as well as in collectively structured groups, including Justseeds and the now-disbanded Street Art Workers and Howling Mob Society . Shaun also practices organic gardening, has a penchant for researching radical North American history, and is a decent bicycle mechanic.
