Delicious! A steady stream of puff pieces on the subject of what we'll be eating later this century floats from the news ether, with one common theme being our eventual switch to a diet heavy with insects. As our burgeoning populations combine with growing global purchasing power to strain Earth's productive systems to the utmost, we'll be forced to rely on sources of protein that require less land and energy to produce; you know, grubs and caterpillars and beetles and worms and we'd better get used to eating them right now! These stories fall broadly within the Scare-the-Americans category, designed to provoke a frisson of horror more than to impel any real thought about what our hungers are doing. We are literally eating our way through the life of this planet, and it's not at all clear that the choices we make or that are sold to us or that we forge into rigid ideologies are going to have any sort of ameliorative effect at all! Food politics is such a divisive and polarizing subject, I wanted to try to throw a bit of humor into the mix. I don't know, does that look genetically modified to you?
