Down the Drain

Scalloped Hammerhead sharks; going, going, soon to be gone? Certainly the case in the Gulf of California, where hammerhead populations have plunged by a factor of 95% in the past ten years. This rapid population decline is attributable to overfishing by small-scale fisherpeople, operating with gillnets out of cheap fiberglass pangas. Industrial overfishing by gillnet and longline has had its impact too, but it's really the little guy that's doing the lion's share of the destruction in this case. What's particularly unpleasant is that the vast majority of the sharks being taken are juveniles. The fisherpeople don't earn much per shark, but gillnetting is so cheap and effective that they can make a little bit of money. Hungry people with children to feed are a terrible force for destruction.
