There is a longstanding tradition of resistance against uranium mining by Aboriginal communities in Australia based on the belief that mining infringes upon land rights and results in the destruction of cultural traditions. The threat of uranium exploration, new uranium mines, and a proposed national nuclear waste dump persist today. The Stop Uranium Mining symbol was designed by the Mirrar People with artist Kathleen McCann in 1998 and used in the successful campaign against the Jabiluka Uranium Mine in Kakadu, Northern Territory, Australia.
