Bec Young
I chose to work with Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice. While living in Detroit for almost a decade, I saw the result of policies, which allowed business and government to disregard the health of the citizens of that city, the majority of which is low-income people of color. This abstract knowledge became heart-wrenching when I visited schools where the children can’t go outside at recess because of air pollution, and when I met elderly people who are afraid to walk around their block because of dumped tires and broken glass. DWEJ is creating a new picture by combining a commitment to social and economic justice with concern for the environment, through programs like Green Jobs Training Program and Youth on Patrol Against Pollution. My poster specifically reflects Build Up Detroit, a program that seeks to create “a vibrant city where all can thrive in environmental, economic and social health and prosperity.”
