The Russian city Karabash, in the Chelyabinsk region in the southern Ural mountains, is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world. The community is infested with the heritage of copper mining, lead galvanizing, and the leeching of chemistry, heavy metals and radioactive waste. After having been closed in 1990, the russian authorities declared the plant, and the area surrounding it, an ‘environmental catastrophe zone’. Eight years later the copper melting plants of Karabash was reopened due to the lack of jobs in the region. A monument to indifference.
Armsrock is an artist and activist whose work focuses on the human condition in the urban environment. By creating hundreds of unique drawings of his fellow citizens, and pasting these original pieces on the walls of the city, Armsrock makes an attempt to generate a critical understanding of the stories and fates that house us.
