Originally created in the mid-90s, shortly after the rise of the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, as an illustration for a local newspaper, the New Mission News. After so many marches and protests through San Francisco's Mission District, it was not hard to imagine a ragtag army of liberation armed with wooden guns, poetry, and indigenous imagination, setting up an autonomous municipality.
"You are in Zapatista rebel territory. Here the people command and the government obeys."
