Cooking Is Self Determination (2009)
This piece is intended to encourage young men of color to take control of their health by learning how to cook. In working class communities of color in particular, messages around food are dominated by corporate fast food chains. Eating processed and industrialized foods hits young people of color in particular - both Black and Brown children are now among the most obese in the country.
Additionally, eating poorly affects how we feel about ourselves, and I believe, leads to a lower performance in school and other social environments. Its hard to think when one is malnourished from lack of eating healthy and whole foods.
