OAXACA. SUPPORT FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF SAN JUAN COPALA

A call to mobilize in support of the resistance of the Autonomous
Municipality of San Juan Copala next June 8
The Autonomous Municipality of San Juan Copala has been under siege for
the last 6 months. Armed paramilitaries continue to block roads and
refuse to allow people to come and go freely. As a result of their
actions, there is no electricity, drinking water, or medical attention
in Copala. The children can’t go to school because there are no
teachers. Paramilitaries shoot at townspeople daily, resulting in the
deaths of at least 21 people between last November and May.
The brutal attack on the caravan on April 27, 2010, in which Human
Rights observers Bety Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola, were killed, was
carried out with total impunity, and the situation in San Juan Copala
has gotten worse since then. Timoteo Alejandro Ramírez, the natural
leader of the Autonomous Municipality, and his wife Cleriberta Castro
were murdered on May 20. These brutal actions not only represent direct
repression against Copala, but are also a message from the bad
government and powerful interests to all the peoples of Oaxaca and
Mexico who are struggling for self-government and defending their forms
of organization and existence.
From the depths of our indigenous roots, we strongly feel that we
cannot abandon our sisters and brothers in the face of these outrageous
attacks. We echo the call sent out by San Juan Copala to all the peoples
of Oaxaca, Mexico, and the world to mobilize next June 8, to help the
Bety Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola Humanitarian Caravan break the
paramilitary siege around the autonomous municipality.
In view of the situation of constant paramilitary hostility experienced
by the townspeople, we call on all of you in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the
world to organize film showings, rallies, encampments, marches,
roadblocks, embassy takeovers, and any and all actions possible in your
local situation to bring public attention to the Bety Cariño and Jyri
Jaakkola Humanitarian Caravan and assist it in achieving its goals.
We ask you to mobilize and help increase the media coverage by freely
spreading information broadcast by Radio Plantón daily from 11am to 5 pm
at this link, http://giss.tv:8001/plantonsonoro.ogg.m3u, as well as
information published on the independent media networks that will be
reporting on the June 8th Caravan. Please stay abreast of the situation
and do all that you can to see that minimum security conditions exist
for achieving the goals of this humanitarian Caravan.
Support the struggle of the Autonomous Municipality of San Juan Copala!
Long live the struggle of the Triqui nation!
Paramilitaries out of the region!
Break the paramilitary siege next June 8!

PROGRAMS OF INFORMATION, REFLECTION AND ANALYSIS REGARDING THE
AUTONOMOUS MUNICIPALITY OF SAN JUAN COPALA AND COVERAGE OF THE “BETY
CARIÑO AND JYRI JAKKOLA CARAVAN”
With the aim of breaking the siege around San Juan Copala, some
independent and community radios have taken on the task of covering the
progress of the Caravan with 5 hours of programming on 5 main topics in
order to generate information and strengthen the autonomous social
movement with a focus on the dignified struggle of the Triqui Nation.
PROGRAM TOPICS
11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. COPALA. Constant human rights violations.
A conversation about the situation of the municipality of San Juan
Copala, its origin in the context of the broad struggle in 2006, and the
violations of the human rights of the municipality by the state
government and UBISORT paramilitaries.
12:00 to 1:00PM. INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. The struggle for self
determination and a life of dignity.
The struggle for autonomy, self-determination and defense of the land
and territory has been constant in the majority of the indigenous
peoples of Mexico, as clearly expressed by the San Andrés Accords
initiated by the EZLN. As of 2009, and especially this year, 2010,
people there has been an escalation in the systematic violence against
the struggle of indigenous peoples. This program features a
conversation dealing with several examples of the struggle for dignity:
Ostula in Michoacán, Atenco, Campeche and the struggle against high
electricity rates, Chiapas, EZLN, ACTEAL and the struggle against
mega-projects, Guerrero and the Community Police, the Council of People
United against La Parota Dam, and the National Indigenous Congress and
the struggles of the indigenous peoples of Oaxaca.
1:00PM to 2:00PM. Repression against the autonomous social movements
Just as there has been ongoing aggression against indigenous peoples
aimed at taking away their lands and territories, there has also been an
intensification of the hostility and persecution against collectives and
organizations struggling for autonomy whose politics do not always
coincide with those of the political parties or the social struggle.
Therefore, it is important to present specific examples and reflections
on the support and coverage of the struggle against repression that has
come down on people building autonomy.
2:00PM to 3:00PM. Statewide, national, and international informational
links.
The proposal is to generate a network of independent and community media
to give coverage to the Caravan to San Juan Copala, monitor the actions
in support of the municipality, and share reflections and commentaries
on the situation in the Caravan.
3:00PM to 4:00PM. International solidarity and support.
In view of the tragic events resulting in the loss of the life of Jyri
Jakkola, an anarchist comrade in struggle from Finland, we think it’s
important to share reflections on internationalist solidarity and
support. We will talk about the contributions made by campers and
caravan members to processes in Chiapas, Nicaragua, Guatemala,
Palestina, and Oaxaca. Solidarity, said Jyri, is putting your body on
the line for what you’re supporting. For the sake of future interchanges
in the struggle of the peoples of the world, it’s important to share our
evaluations of internationalist contributions.
