Vanessa Renwick sent along info about this interesting looking show up in Portland right now:

What is a Trade: Donald Fels and Signboard Painters of South India
Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art
0615 SW Palatine Hill Road, Portland, OR
January 21 to March 14
gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11am to 4pm

from the website:

What is a Trade? Donald Fels and Signboard Painters of South India, exhibits 16 large-scale paintings that explore trade and globalization in India. Fels’ conceptual starting point for this exhibition was Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama’s 1498 voyage to Malabar, India, in search of a direct sea route for the spice trade. This exhibition explores the historic and modern-day legacy of that expedition more than 500 years later.

More info HERE. The one thing I find strange (and I haven't seen the exhibition, so I might be missing something) is that if this is a questioning of global trade, then why are the Indian collaborators left unnammed?

In the catalog for the show, the artists are profiled. I can not remember if their names are up at the show itself. The pics in the catalogue that are in a gallery say, "courtesy of the artists".
