Mariposas

At one time in my life I found myself working in a small, community based theatre, teaching small children of Mexican descent about the migration patterns of Monarch butterflies. It struck me then as a great metaphor for open borders, because even when Monarchs stop for a generation, their offspring intuitively know how to continue, and who stops the free travel of butterflies?
Further inspiration was my young friend Laura, who maintains a positive attitude and penchant for dreaming despite all the obstacles in her life. The text, "...como las mariposas insisten en volar..." means "like butterflies insist on flying".

This is a reduction cut of a design I made originally as a silkscreen.
