This is a portrait of John Brown that I made for the Justseeds book project Firebrands. Brown was a complex character and I wanted to show him not as the bearded messianic madman, but as someone a little thornier. I set the portrait of him, based on his time in Kansas, when he was carrying on a running battle with pro-slavery forces there. The house on fire is America, built on the foundation of slavery.
